Last year we release a couple of tutorials taking a look at the classic priori incantatem effect from the Harry Potter films. Rather later than we'd intended, we've finally release the third part of the tutorial which focuses on the best bit: the particles splashing on the ground.

Even if you're not a Harry Potter fan, this tutorial is packed full of useful information about using the particle simulator, forces, deflectors and point layers so is recommended viewing!

Oh, we also have a project file that you can download from here.

Thanks, Simon. This was spot on. A number of things that were puzzling me about particle systems have been explained. Your style is great - simple without being at all condescending, friendly without being distracting. Thanks again - a great product with great support. Fergus

A terrific introductory look at the particle simulator, Simon! Great job keeping things clear and simple, while still providing a general overview. I think new users will be able to easily apply the knowledge imparted here to other uses of the particle simulator as well.

immediatley made me want to fire particles off a wall unfortunetly they bounce off rather than hit it and fall down. I dont want them to be affect by force until they hit wall.
still with every tuturial I'm understaning the particle more.

madmike - sounds like you need to reduce your bounce property. Drop that to zero and the particles should hit the wall and then fall straight down without bouncing off. You'll also need a direction force to simulate gravity to pull them down.

Something I've been meaning to try for a while is using deflectors to simulate paint hitting a wall. I reckon it could be used to do a live action version of Portal 2's paint guns:
