HitFilm 2 Ultimate for Mac is here!

Posted by Simon K Jones on November 4, 2013

The big day is here. HitFilm 2 Ultimate is now available for Mac filmmakers!

The OS X version brings all the visual effects, compositing and video editing features enjoyed by Windows users to the Mac platform for the first time.

Today's update also brings new features to the Windows version with two brand new effects. Existing users will get an update notification the next time you run the software.

To celebrate the Mac launch we've put together some new promos videos. You can find what we're calling the Exploded Trailer above, in which we take a closer, behind-the-scenes look at the original HitFilm 2 launch trailer. And then we have these three new promos which examine HitFilm's three pillars:

Don't forget that the HitFilm 2 Ultimate license allows 3 activations, on any platforms. So if you have both a Mac and a Windows PC you can install on both of them without having to pay anything extra.

We'd like to take this opportunity to say another thank you to our Kickstarter backers and a huge welcome to our new Mac users.

Exciting times!

Yup, I did-done, diddly-d-done-done installed it (Windows update). Installer ran smoothly, everything looks good.

Amazed that the new version's installer was a mere 400K larger than the previous version--you guys are pretty efficient coders.

Congrats FXHome and Mac users!

P.S. Cinestyle looks neat--seems to combine some exposure, saturation and gamma curves with some grain and vignetting, along with matte bars to provide the functions of several of the old tools, all inside one effect. Plus, matte bars

Installed on my Mac(s) and ready to roll! You guys deserve all the kudos for putting together a solid, powerful product, and having such a great and open relationship with your customers. Well done, team.

My clips are "jerky".

HitFilm is designed primarily for progressive footage. Do you have a way of recording progressive?

No plugin API, no scripting, doesn't work in different color spaces (in high bit depths), no support of professional file formats (DPX, OpenEXR, cDNG, .rd3), and no XML import and/or export.

It's an ISLAND with a few "wow" features that you'll only need 1% of the time at best and aren't any better than what's already out there. Even if it is cheap (in other words aimed at those that can't work or afford AE etc. and don't know any better).
Pair all that with its very BASIC editing tools (compared with FCP X, PPro or any other NLE out there), especially when it comes to audio, and the upshot is: useless for any pro environment let alone for ANY type of collaborative work, since there's no real getting in or out.
Nice consumer tool and surely great for the underprivileged Windows user's, I'm sure, but will not be getting out of a very clear NICHE existence anytime soon IMO. And by that time the competition will be that much further along.

You kind of answered your own points there, Andie. HitFilm from the start was developed for a particular type of filmmaker: you're clearly not that filmmaker. :)

That said, we're getting more and more attention from high end users and there's lots of exciting things to come in that respect over the next 12 months (which, irritatingly, I can't talk about just yet). We're certainly aware that there are specific workflow requirements for high end pro users.

I'd be interested to hear what you class as the 'wow' features. If I had to pick just two it'd be the particle sim and the 3D model import, both of which I personally use extensively as do many, many others - certainly not "1% of the time".

There's a wishlist topic on the forum where we're taking feedback from people on what they want to see in the software. Continuing HitFilm's development is something we're fully committed to - you only have to compare the jump from HitFilm 1 to HitFilm 2 to see that. The future will see similarly huge leaps.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback - we do appreciate it, even the negative stuff. It's all useful for ensuring we keep improving.

(oh, and "underprivileged Windows users"? What?)

I saw your comment. I am having the same problem! It is very frustrating because the software doesn't work at all. I went into Library/Application Support/FXHome/Hit Film 2 Ultimate and there are no texture files there. I have uninstalled the program several times and reinstalled it but to no avail. I have asked customer support to help. Haven't heard from them yet. Let me know if anyone hears of the solution. Thank you.
