Some people think I'm a little obsessed with space, which is probably a reasonable accusation. I've been known to do the occasional nebula or starfield tutorial. It was therefore inevitable that I'd be excited to see John Wuopio's very pretty Space Station shot, featured above.
Reel Havoc are also back with their usual mix of high octane adventure and VFX, aimed squarely at Film Riot's Monday Challenge. They've used all kinds of fancy camera tricks to freshen up what would otherwise be a …
The last few community spotlights have kicked off with a visual effects test but this week we're highlighting a great short film by Adam Lawson, an old FXhome veteran who has recently resurfaced on the HitFilm.com community.
Good Morning overcame a troubled production to become a thought-provoking, genre-twisting short film with some lovely cinematography and a simple idea at its core. Make sure you go in cold and stick with it to the end - it makes for rewarding viewing. Discuss it over on …
The fantastic music video above accompanies Run Boy Run by British musician and producer Woodkid. This year FXhome is proud to be sponsoring Woodkid at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival.
Norwich is host to a vibrant creative culture and the city's annual festival is a major event in the UK and European arts scene, drawing in thousands of visitors and showcasing exceptional talent in music, film, digital arts, theatre and dance.
With a commitment to developing arts and cultural …
Kahveh Robinett is back with his best VFX test to date. His WW2 Fake Footage video is possibly the best use of HitFilm 2 Ultimate's 3D models we've seen so far. The whole video is constructed inside HitFilm 2 and it does a fantastic job of creating a realistic 3D space, combining images, particles, stock and 3D models along. We particularly like the variety and inventiveness of the shots, especially the propeller-POV one.
Late last week the news broke that Petro Vlahos has died at the age of 96. You may not recognise his name but you're almost certainly familiar with the technology he helped perfect over the years: the use of bluescreen and greenscreen in video and film compositing.
While the general concept existed before Vlahos' pioneering work in the 1950s, it wasn't until his efforts for 1959's Ben Hur that the bluescreen technique advanced to a level that could hold up on the big screen. The …
Video Game High School season 2 has met its Kickstarter goal! And when we say 'met', we mean 'obliterated'. The RocketJump crew asked for a seemingly over-ambitious $636,010, prompting some to wonder whether Kickstarter backers would be ready to fund such a large project. Turns out there was nothing to worry about, with the campaign coming in at a remarkable $742,631, in the process becoming the biggest film project the crowdfunding site has seen so far.
We've made a few minor tweaks to the Movie Wall recently to help highlight the best content. It now defaults to the 'featured' view, so that you can get an instant fix of interesting VFX tests and short films.
This means you won't miss out on cool videos such as the 3D helicopter test seen above. Although there are a few issues - the scale of the chopper and some missing masking around the foliage - it's nevertheless a great example of compositing 3D models inside HitFilm 2 …
Tyler's back with this short but awesome shot of a toy helicopter getting more than it bargained for, demonstrating again his ability to realistically composite 3D models into a live action shot - even in an intrinsically unreal scenario.
Then we have Snowblind, a simple but nicely shot pursuit sequence from Strike Em Studios. It's a great example of getting out there with a camera and taking advantage of whatever conditions nature throws at you:
How is 2013 treating everybody? Now that I'm back from paternity leave you can expect to see lots of detailed tutorials appearing based around shots from our What's Your Idea? trailer - I hope to cover as many shots as possible. We're also starting to plan out possibly using Google Hangouts for a regular, 'live' HitFilm show, and you can read about some of the ideas over on the forum.
Meanwhile, you chaps have been busy. At the top of this post you can see the latest work …
