Hey everyone! Ever since I saw Majahr's cool starfield test right back when HitFilm was released I wanted to see if I could create a cool space establishing shot.

This is by no means finished, but I'm quite pleased with how it looks so far:

Obviously the 'spacedust' particles are simple untextured circles at the moment and it's lacking in detail in general, but using fairly simple techniques it's already looking quite funky.

Once I'm back from my wedding shenanigans at the end of the month I'll be putting together a proper tutorial on a more polished version of this shot.

Amazing!

The only issue is the texture (or lack of) for the stars; it's particularly noticeable at 0:05. Put some star textures in there and it will be perfect!

Most impressive. Your skills are nearly complete....for this effect anyway.

Great job, Simon! And I hope you have a safe, happy and fun time on your honeymoon (you're not going to this nebula are you? There he goes, off to live in the little universe he's created  ). Congrats to you and your bride. I'm sure you'll be missed around here.
I am an optimistic pessimist......I look forward to things going wrong.

This looks sweet!, but yeah - stars need textures. Particularly at 0:05 , as a star comes right up close to the camera. I'd love to know how you made the fluffy space cloud!, his it a transparent PNG? - some sort of preset?

Yep, as noted the space dust is just there to give it a sense of motion at the moment, and haven't been textured or finessed at all.

The space cloud is a mixture of a 3D particle cloud and a sliced up 2D NASA image. The bulk of it is the NASA image, but I then stuck on the basic 'fluffy cloud' effect to give the whole area a sense of volumetric density, as the camera moves through it. The end result is that - for the most part - it's hard to see what exactly is flat image and what is proper 3D cloud.

I enjoy learning about special effects as a hobby. I make Doctor Who stuff with and for the family. Slowly improving at hitfilm with a long way to go.

The only issue I see is that after his end-of-month wedding shennanigans, he'll be wrapped up in his beginning-of-month newlywed shennanigans (possibly even carrying on to middle-of-month shennanigans, unless of course he hits the time-of-month shennanigans barrier), which will push back his time to make a tutorial on this really nice effect even farther..
My guide entry used to just say "Clueless."
Now it says, "Mostly Clueless."

Hehe, thanks guys. I definitely want to put a tute together for this sooner rather than later.

In case you didn't spot it in the recent showreel, here's a newer version of the shot:

Considerably improved from the original, I think. What do you reckon?
